Over half of the United States foster children are being cared for in foster homes that receive $24.16 to $30.00 per day to cover the cost of the needs of the child. The stipend is to buy food, 90% of the clothes, toys, bedding, toiletries, and any infant equipment such as cribs, car seats, strollers and bottles that are critical in caring for a child in today?s world, plus any extra-curricular activities that a healthy growing child may or should have the opportunity to do. This small stipend does not cover the cost of raising a child, in fact, two thirds of the care of the foster child will undoubtedly come out of the foster parents own finances.
There are an estimated 523,000 foster care children in the U.S. These children require specially tailored education and assistance to help with the difficult transition from youth to adulthood. Unlike their peers in traditional families, foster children often do not have an adequate safety net or social network. They are unable to rely on parents and other relatives for support during the school years and to facilitate a smooth transition out of the home and into adulthood.
Because of the high cost of raising a child and the financial stress it will put on the basic care foster home, many good homes are forced to close and end their quest in helping the children, leaving a large number of children having to enter group homes, shelters and overcrowded foster homes. Most children would benefit more from a loving family setting to help them overcome the trauma of abuse and neglect and to learn what a family setting should be like in order to function later on in life when starting their own families, thus ending the cycle of abuse and neglect that they were born into.
