In Maryland we have the Eastern Subterranean Termite (Reticulitermes flavipes). Swarming occurs here typically in March through May. A swarmer is about 3/8 inches long with a dark brown to black body. The wings are opaque (milky in color). Swarming occurs frequently after a rain when the humidity levels are higher and on warmer days. It is always a good idea to save a specimen for identification purposes. It is recommended that the specimen be in a jar to keep it intact.

Eastern subterranean termite colonies usually reside in the ground below the frost line and above the water table. Termites build mud tubes to cross areas to obtain food. They may enter structures in cracks less than 1/16th inch. Control involves creating a chemical barrier around the perimeter of the structure. In ground monitoring-baiting stations may also be placed around the perimeter of the structure in the soil.
