KENT SCHOOL ADOPTS “CHARITABLENESS” AS SCHOOL-WIDE THEME FOR THE YEAR
During the 2010-2011 school year, Kent School faculty and students will work together to promote a theme of charitableness throughout the school community and beyond. Each division of the school, Little School, Lower School and Middle School, is developing service and fundraising plans to benefit a chosen charity.
Little School students have chosen the Kent County Humane Society as their beneficiary. Through lessons around the “Save, Spend, Share” theme, students will save change and found money so they can spend it on supplies for the Humane Society and share their resources with this local, worthy cause.
The Lower School has also chosen “Save, Spend, Share” as a theme for the school’s charitable giving effort. Children will save their change and select something for the school on which to spend part of their savings. They will share the remainder with the Chester River Association, thus making another local connection in keeping with Kent School’s commitment to the environment through Bay Studies and as a designated Green School.
The Chestertown Food pantry continues to receive support from Kent School Middle School students. For several years, eighth grade students have organized canned and non-perishable food drives throughout the year, especially around Thanksgiving. Students will continue their efforts on behalf of the Chestertown Food pantry this year but will also expand their efforts in support of several other charities that provide food for needy people. Projects will support Water Missions Charity, Heifer International, Feed the Children, and Free Rice.
Kent School’s Interim Headmaster, Peter Cowen said, “The charitableness idea began last spring with one simple comment. I was so impressed with the faculty response. Our teachers took hold of the idea. With speed and compassion they developed plans so every Kent School student could participate.” Cowen continued, “I am also very proud of our students’ enthusiasm for their charitable work. We hope this is a step toward a life-long inclination to help others and give back.”
