Come see why we are the "Country Club" of self storage.
When Thom Whalen left Washington D.C. five years ago and headed for Ocean City, he was ready to begin a peaceful retirement on the beach.
The only problem, Whalen said, was in finding adequate storage space for his and his wife's, Connie's, belongings.
"We love the beach and our grandkids love it here, but I needed a place to store my boat, among other things," Whalen said.
On May 1, Whalen and his wife opened Delmarva Self Storage to help people facing similar complications to their plans. And to create storage space for their own belongings.
The storage facility located in Bishopville has been under construction for two years, but is now ready to serve residents of Ocean City, Ocean Pines, Berlin, Bishopville and surrounding areas.
After just one month of business, the 220 units are 10 percent rented, Whalen said.
"We consider this the country club of storage facilities," Whalen said. "We spent a lot of money on landscaping, lighting and security."
A little research told Whalen that 75 percent of storage renters are women. Knowing that, Whalen said he made sure to make the facility pleasing and safe.
Each unit is individually lit and the entire facility is fenced and security gated. Lights surrounding Delmarva Self Storage are on 24 hours a day.
Managers are on-site to provide additional security and help. Location is another bonus for safety, Whalen said, with the facility being nicely hidden from busy beach activity four miles north of Route 90, off of St. Martins Neck Road.
A property surrounded by flowers and creative landscaping makes the facility beautiful and unique.
"No one on Delmarva has ever seen anything that compares to this," Whalen said. "Every customer that's come by has ended up renting a unit."
A special feature of the units is that some are climate controlled. Whalen said climate control is more complex than standard temperature control.
With the use of humidifiers and dehumidifiers, humidity is kept at levels that inhibit the growth of mold and mildew, Whalen said.
And people need not worry about pests entering their unit, he said. The entire storage facility is pest-controlled every month.
"Even though our buildings are clean, you never know what some people might bring with them," Whalen said.
The couple has plans to build another 350 units in the future, which would increase the current 32,000 square feet of storage space to 58,000.
