We are your neighborhood summer day camp, horseback riding center, and nursery school/ kindergarten located in Rockville, MD, the heart of Montgomery County, approximately 10 miles from the Washington DC city line. It is a unique environment, close to the city yet with a strong country feeling.
For 50 years, Camp Olympia has been serving families in the Washington suburban area. All of our facilities are located at the Camp, which is the home of Stephen and Elizabeth Benedek, the founders of Camp Olympia. Steve and Elizabeth came to this country from their native country of Hungary where Steve was coaching modern pentathlon (five sports with one of them being horseback riding) on the Olympic level and Elizabeth was playing basketball on the national team. They were forced to leave their country due to the communist regime. Upon coming to America, Steve became a professor at Georgetown University. He is an inducted member of the Hall of Fame for his coaching of the Georgetown track and field team. Elizabeth is the retired Director of Womens Athletics at Loyola College, having also taught at Cathedral School and Stone Ridge. They both have their Master's degrees in physical education and feel that being involved in a healthy sports program, such as ours, provides a good influence for a healthy life. They have shared their love of teaching and desire to educate others with thousands of campers, riders, and preschoolers for the past 50 years and look forward to working with you!
We offer an instructional sports day camp for children ages 3 -15. Our sports include: swimming (twice a day for ages 6 +/ once a day for ages 5 and below), horseback riding (four times per week), gymnastics, soccer, tennis, basketball, track and field, plus MUCH MORE!! Horseback Riding / Horse Boarding
Our year round horseback riding program is for ages 5 through adults, all levels of experience. We have 16 + school horses offering something for everyone. Our facilities include an indoor ring, one outdoor lighted ring, one lunging ring, two large grass dressage fields, a large jumping field with about 20 jumps, and miles of cross country jumps and trails. We are a fully equipped, high quality instructional facility and all of our instructors are certified through CHA, Certified Horsemanship Association. In addition, we have two teams of riders, a junior and senior team, who compete against other area riding schools throughout the school year. We offer limited openings for horse boarding as well.
Nursery School / Kindergarden
Our beautiful year round school, Camp Olympia Country Day School, has openings for 2-6 year olds. Our small class size gives your child an opportunity to get a head start and the extra attention needed at this early developmental age. Our goal is to give the children a well balanced experience. We recognize that children develop differently, and we appreciate each childs unique characteristics and interests. Through our wide variety of daily activities, we work to promote physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth. All of our excellent staff are experienced, qualified teachers who implement a professionally developed curriculum appropriate for young children. We offer full time enrollment (5 days per week) and limited openings for two and three day programs. We take full advantage of our unique country setting including daily nature walks. We take a very personal approach to our prospective nursery schoolers, so please call for a tour and more information.
**If you have any special requests or needs regarding your child, please discuss them with Stephen Benedek prior to registration. In addition Camp Olympic/ Camp Olympia reserves the right to dismiss a child without refund if for any reason the child is found to be disruptive to the program.
