The cases in the photo gallery were performed at our office involving restoration with composite (tooth-colored filling material) and with Cerec (high impact ceramic crowns and veneers).
Composite filling can be bonded directly to prepared tooth structure, then sculpted and polished to desired shape and effect. Composite comes in a variety of colors to match or lighten the existing tooth structure. It can serve well for a number of years, but can stain and wear depending on oral conditions.

Time demands are a common concern in today's busy society. New advances in technology can help minimize disruptions in a hectic schedule by reducing the time and number of appointments necessary in healthcare treatment. An example of this is the high tech innovation in dentistry know by the acronym CEREC.
CEREC stands for Chairside, Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic.
Chairside means the dentist can provide the treatment (crown, veneer, inlay, etc.) in one patient visit, and ceramic refers to the final product - a non metallic restoration which is bonded to the existing or remaining tooth structure. As such, CEREC restorations are extremely durable and natural looking.
In contrast to traditional methods, CEREC does not require impressions or the making of temporaries. CEREC technology employs extremely accurate digital imaging. A crown can be designed on a computer monitor where coordinates are then realyed to a precision milling unit. The crown is fabricated while the patient waits (usually 15-20 minutes). The crown is then finished, adjusted and bonded to the patient's tooth - a completed product in one appointment.
Many studies have shown CEREC restorations to last as long as gold restorations (long considered the industry standard in quality and longevity).
The benefit to patients is a tooth-colored restoration which matches the look and feel of their natural tooth. The wear rate of CEREC is close to that of today's clinical challenges - particularly that of increasing patient demands for "tooth-colored" with high quality, long lasting restorations.
This excellent method of restoring teeth does not cost more than traditional laboratory-fabricated work, while providing a savings in time and convenience.

An important part of our practice profile is to endeavor to offer the best care.
Our office has recently undergone a makeover with new equipment throughout the patient care areas. Our x-ray units are all digital to reduce exposure to the lowest levels while improving diagnostic quality.
We have incorporated a variety of other technologies such as the Odyssey Diode Laser to enhance effectiveness.

Originally from the Washington, D.C. suburbs, Frank settled in Allegany County with his wife, Frostburg native Cathy Schutz Mitchell, in 1980. He has since practiced full-time dentistry and enjoyed the peacefulness of the area. Cathy and Frank have one son, Brian, who attended George Washington University and is living in Herndon, VA with his wife Yelena and their daughter Victoria.
Frank is a self-trained artist who has been oil painting steadily for the past 10 years.
"I believe artists represent the essence of human existence at a given point along the time scale and for a given cultural context. There are certain common features that exist, repeat and seem valid in defining what is human. I try to unconsciously reach this ground through study of ancient cultures and through my own art. I have tried to remain unschooled and primitive in my approach.
My primary goal is to produce artwork with staying power, works that interact with the viewer. Hopefully my work has a kinetic energy and enigmatic quality that continues to engage."
Frank had produced a series of paintings based on a visit to Florence, Italy and a series based on the Western Maryland mountain region. Both are intended to convey the feeling of everyday life and people portrayed in simple terms.
Frank has exhibited at the Saville Gallery in Cumberland in 2005 and at the U.S. Consulate in Florence, Italy between 2002-2005.
Previously he had paintings displayed at the Benjamin Gallery in Hagerstown, Maryland.
Dr. Frank Mitchell recently exhibited his paintings at the C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts in Cumberland from October 7 - November 4, 2007.
