You’ve probably heard of deep vein thrombosis (or DVT), a type of blood clot that occurs in veins deep inside the legs. What you might not have heard of is superficial thrombophlebitis, another type of clot that can occur in the legs. There are some notable differences between these two types of clots: Olney varicose vein doctor Dr. Hamza Rana explains more below.

What do Washington DCresidents need to know about superficial thrombophlebitis?

The best way to understand superficial thrombophlebitis is to break down its name. “Superficial” means close to the skin’s surface. A “thrombus” is a blood clot, and “phlebitis” is inflammation of the vein. Put them all together and you have a blood clot that forms inside the small blood vessels or capillaries just underneath the skin’s surface.

The good news about this type of clot is that it is nowhere near as serious as deep vein thrombosis, which can contribute to pulmonary embolism, stroke, and other dangerous complications. While superficial thrombophlebitis can irritate the vein wall and cause discomfort, it rarely requires medical treatment and usually resolves on its own.

Just because superficial thrombophlebitis resolves on its own does not mean it’s not worthwhile to seek relief from its symptoms. This type of clot can be painful, and the goal of superficial vein disease treatment in Washington DC is to relieve this discomfort. Many of our patients have found that wearing compression stockings and keeping their leg elevated can reduce the pain and swelling associated with this type of clot. Your doctor may also recommend taking an over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, such as ibuprofen.

If you suspect that superficial thrombophlebitis is the source of your discomfort, it is best to check in with a top vein center in Montgomery County. Our vein expert will thoroughly assess your condition, rule out any more serious issues, and recommend effective treatment options to help you feel more comfortable. Now is the time to address any vein issues you may be experiencing: call us at (301) 637-3088 to learn how.
